PTE Exam Pattern 2026 — Complete Breakdown of All Sections

The PTE Academic exam is a 3-hour computer-based English proficiency test divided into three main sections: Speaking and Writing, Reading, and Listening. Understanding the exam pattern in detail is the first step toward effective preparation. This guide covers every question type, timing, and scoring aspect of the PTE exam in 2026.

We provide a granular breakdown of all 20 question types, including the precise cross-scoring matrix, to help you target maximum points across the Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening modules.

Part 1: Speaking and Writing (77-90 minutes)

This is the longest section of the PTE exam and tests your ability to communicate in English through spoken and written responses.

Personal Introduction (1 minute — not scored)

You have 25 seconds to prepare and 30 seconds to introduce yourself. While this section is not scored, your response is sent to institutions along with your score report.

Read Aloud (6-7 items — 30-40 seconds each)

You see a text on screen and have 30-40 seconds to read it aloud. This task contributes to both your Speaking and Reading scores. Focus on pronunciation, fluency, and intonation. Practice with academic-style passages on topics like science, history, and technology.

Repeat Sentence (10-12 items — 15 seconds each)

You hear a sentence and must repeat it exactly as heard. This tests your listening and speaking skills simultaneously. Sentences range from 3 to 9 seconds in length. Focus on capturing the exact words, not paraphrasing.

Describe Image (6-7 items — 40 seconds each)

You see a graph, chart, map, or process diagram and have 25 seconds to prepare and 40 seconds to describe it. Use a structured template: "This image shows... The key trends are... The highest value is... The lowest value is... In conclusion..."

Re-tell Lecture (3-4 items — 40 seconds each)

You hear a 60-90 second academic lecture and have 40 seconds to retell it in your own words. Practice taking notes of key points, dates, names, and numbers. Focus on the main idea, not every detail.

Summarize Written Text (1-2 items — 10 minutes each)

You read a passage of up to 300 words and write a one-sentence summary of 5-75 words. This tests your reading and writing skills. Focus on identifying the main idea and supporting points.

Write Essay (1-2 items — 20 minutes each)

You write a 200-300 word essay on a given topic. Use a clear structure: introduction, 2-3 body paragraphs, and conclusion. Focus on grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and coherence. Common topics include education, technology, environment, and society.

Part 2: Reading (32-41 minutes)

The Reading section tests your ability to understand academic texts.

Fill in the Blanks (Reading) — 4-5 items

You see a text with blanks and drag words from a box to fill them. This tests vocabulary and reading comprehension. Focus on context clues and collocations.

Multiple Choice (Single Answer) — 1-2 items

You read a text and choose one correct answer from four options. Focus on skimming for the main idea and scanning for specific details.

Multiple Choice (Multiple Answers) — 1-2 items

Similar to single answer but you must select all correct options. Incorrect answers receive negative marking.

Re-order Paragraphs — 2-3 items

You see 4-5 sentences in random order and must arrange them logically. Focus on transition words, pronouns, and chronological markers.

Fill in the Blanks (Reading and Writing) — 5-6 items

You see a text with dropdown menus in blanks and select the correct word. This tests both reading comprehension and grammar knowledge.

Part 3: Listening (45-57 minutes)

The Listening section uses audio clips with diverse English accents — Australian, British, American, and Canadian.

Summarize Spoken Text — 1-2 items

You hear a 60-90 second lecture and write a 50-70 word summary in 10 minutes. Focus on the main idea and 2-3 supporting points.

Multiple Choice (Single and Multiple) — 2-4 items

You hear a recording and answer questions about its content. Multiple answer questions have negative marking for incorrect selections.

Fill the Blanks — 2-3 items

You see a transcript with blanks and type the missing words as you listen. Focus on exact spelling — one wrong letter costs a point.

Highlight Correct Summary — 1-2 items

You hear a recording and select the paragraph that best summarizes it from four options.

Select Missing Word — 1-2 items

You hear a recording where the last word is replaced by a beep. Select the correct word to complete the sentence.

Highlight Incorrect Words — 1-2 items

You see a transcript while listening to a recording. Click on words that differ from what you hear. Focus on synonyms and similar-sounding words.

Write from Dictation — 3-4 items

You hear a sentence and type it exactly as heard. This is one of the highest-weightage items in the PTE exam. Practice with varied sentence lengths and complex vocabulary.

PTE Scoring System Explained

PTE uses a global scoring scale of 10-90. The test is scored entirely by AI (known as "Versant" technology), ensuring consistent and unbiased evaluation. PTE uses cross-scoring, meaning your performance in one section can affect scores in other sections. For example, Read Aloud contributes to both your Speaking and Reading scores. Write from Dictation contributes to both Listening and Writing scores.
